So, if you are struggling to get the kart turning mid corner you should consider a stiffer axle. Stiffer axles on the other hand will give you more rear grip as the chassis will flex more. Softer axles will offer less rear grip as the chassis will be flexing less (the load transfer shifts focus from the frame to the axle). They come in the form of soft, medium and hard, and some axles may also feature intermediates between those. The rear axle comes in 3 different stiffness settings. The goal is to get the inside rear wheel to lift during cornering which will help the kart to rotate (this is called jacking). So, keeping that in mind, chassis setup is all about how much you want the chassis to flex. This flexing motion allows the kart to corner much faster (relatively speaking) and with more agility than a car. Its only ‘purpose’ is to flex as the kart turns around corners.

In fact, a kart chassis is extremely primitive compared to that of a car. There’s no dampers or springs to adjust like in a car, so it is very different. It can be difficult to know where to start or what to even do in order to change the way the chassis works on a kart. The chassis can be a tricky thing to setup, especially for newcomers to the sport. You need to find what works for you! Chassis Setup Remember, no two drivers will like the exact same setup every time. These will help you find the type of handling you need from your kart. No matter at what level you are racing, having the right setup is key.īelow we will cover some basic setup guides very briefly so that you know where to start. If you know your setups and you know how to get your kart working correctly, it could help you get the edge over that championship rival that you have been battling with all season, or it could help you get your first podium. A world champion will know exactly how they want their kart setup, and they know what works for them. The difference between a karting world champion and a driver that is struggling is not always related to the driver’s ability. The difference between a good setup and a bad setup could mean the difference between qualifying on pole or starting from the back.

We even see Formula 1 drivers sometimes struggle with their setups and lose quite a lot of time from using the wrong ones. Setup is the most important element of being fast, not only in karting but also in car racing too. Of course, you’ll want to keep everything within the rules in order to be able to participate in races, so we are only looking at how to make your kart faster according to the general rules of kart racing. Keep your kart clean and well maintained. Our local club has some enduro format race within regular club rounds coming up and i’d like to be up to the task.Whether you are taking up karting as a hobby, or you are aiming to go professional and win championships, everyone wants to make their own kart as fast as possible, while also doing it legally. Practicing staying on it up to 150 lap sessions. Next, i plan on building up my mental focus duration. Worth every cent it cost to setup imo and i gained 1200 laps free ‘seat time’ this week alone. Trying to force myself mentally into that nirvana driving bubble. Looking ahead, mental focus, identifying key points and being smooth were my big big big takeaways. I set myself tasks and goals for each session and timed my sessions to 20 minutes. If i can replicate that come race weekend i should be right up the pointy end of business (yes, reality will be a hard mistress).

On my first lap at tonights closed practice and testing I was 3.216!!! seconds quicker then my P.B. This can be a genuine training aid, at least on a rookie level.Īs above, despite missing G forces i have learnt some of the karting specific basics AND they have transfered to real life track driving. I reckon i can categorically state that as a rookie to karts, this was absolutely most definitely helpful to me. I’ve basically dismissed lap times for speed purposes knowing that the lap times will come down by doing the above correctly. Aiming for smooth driving and clean lines combined with accurate pedal control. Seeing as picking out braking points due to difficult 3d depth perception plus the braking and G forces can’t be felt correctly, i’ve been tuning settings for realistic input feel and response and cocentrated on my focal points and looking ahead. And a carry over from my dirt bike background, dismissing mistakes for later processing rather than dwellng on them and compounding the error. Braking techniques, focal points and shifting brain processing to autonomous control via looking ahead without lingering too long. I’ve been reading your book repeatedly lately and made a list of items to work on in order to set up good practices and techniques from the get go. You’ve completely reinforced exactly what I had focussed on with KRP.
